going gluten free

Good Morning,

I don’t believe I posted yesterday and forgot to wish you all a Happy Halloween! Halloween is actually my favorite holiday, I love fall, I love candy and I love costumes: win, win and win. Unfortunately this year we didn’t do any celebrating with our vacation and all. We were actually chatting last night about how we where both sad we didn’t do anything but vowed to have a party next year.

My IBS has been acting up lately and I have been getting sick almost everyday. I also have been vomiting after I eat various foods. The doctor decided to run a few tests on me including one for celiac disease, gluten tolerance and different food allergies. Last week while I was in front of The Bellagio I got a call from my doctor informing me I have a Gluten Intolerance, I don’t have Celiac Disease but I am extremely sensitive to Gluten. The doctor recommended from here on out I go Gluten Free. At first I was upset I mean I loved carbs, I love bagels, I love pasta and I especially love bread but CZ shed some light on the situation but explaining all the positives to me: I won’t get sick after a half of beer anymore, I won’t feel bloated all the time, I won’t have to leave parties because my stomach is acting up, and so on.

While I was on vacation I picked up The G-Free Diet by Elisabeth Hasselbeck. I finished the book on vacation and prepared a shopping list for the week.

I knew some things would have to change:

For Example:

Megan w/o Gluten Intolerance Megan w/ Gluten Intolerance
Breakfast Bagel w/ butter or Honey Nut Cheerios Oatmeal or Gluten Free Cereal
Morning Snack Banana Banana (score!)
Lunch Sandwich, salad, burrito, pasta (basically whatever I feel like ordering for the day) (Homemade lunch)Salad (no croutons), Brown Rice with chicken, quinoa, etc
Afternoon Snack Popchips Chobani Yogurt
Dinner Pasta, Meat/Potato/Veggie combo, hamburger, waffles, etc Meat/ Veggie, Sweet Potato’s, Spaghetti Squash, Brown Rice, etc

Here is a look at day 1

Breakfast Oatmeal w/ apple
Morning Snack Banana
Lunch Brown Rice w/ chicken and soy sauce (gluten free of course)
Afternoon Snack Chobani Yogurt (Strawberry)
Dinner Small burger (bunless) w/ a sweet potato and salad.
Desert Sugar Free Chocolate Pudding w/ Kraft FF Cool Whip

While on vacation I didn’t run at all; instead I climbed, hiked and walked a lot. Last night I hit up the gym for a quick 3 miles (28 minutes!!) followed by 30 minutes on the elliptical. It felt great to get back at it.

Tomorrow I am going to post my marathon training schedule. (It’s taken me 3 days to complete).

  1. Welcome to the wonderful world of gluten free! I promise, it’s really not that bad. There are so many gf options out there as you’re probably already realizing. Feel free to contact me if you need any suggestions but here are a few I’ll offer right now:
Glutino & Udi’s make pretty good bagels & bread. Udi’s bread is actually pretty good without having to toast it- I use it often to make grilled cheese. They also have great hamburger & hot dog buns. Glutino’s bread & bagels are great but only when toasted.
Tinkyada is the best gluten free pasta- it tastes just like regular pasta & comes in almost all the typical shapes. Just don’t overcook it & you’ll love it!

    • Thank you so much for your tips! I dind’t realize you where GF.. I think the hardest part is this week because I am still getting use to it and looking at a million labels.

  2. My IBS has been out of control since August. It got to the point where I was so sick every day that I was having panic attacks every morning because of having to take public transportation and I kept having to get off to find bathrooms. Luckily my panic attacks have calmed down a bit my dr hasn’t been much help. She just gave me some stomach muscle relaxers and told me to start taking immodium every day. I dont think it’s gluten for me though.. I feel fine after I eat bread and pasta. I was hoping for a food allergy because it’s so much easier than never knowing when you’ll feel awful next.

  3. I’m sorry to hear you have a gluten allergy, but it’s good you at least found out what was causing you pain!!! I’ve tried Gluten Free pasta before and it’s pretty good. You should try the restaurant “Bistango” on 29th and 3rd — it’s one of my favorite Italian restaurants and they just happen to specialize in gluten free stuff (I’m not Gluten free, but they have delicious gluten food as well).

We need to run together one day (hopefully soon)! Can’t wait to see you training plan, I still need to commit to one.
